Burundi Training Hub

HJEM is committed to helping our neighbours. Burundi, is one of the poorest countries in the world where we aim to transport furniture and further skills workshops for developing home and job creation with vocational training and City & Guilds qualifications for community growth.

Focus Areas

Our focus is in developing training programmes for work, changing lives in the process. With a focus on training in traditional skills we incorporate - Craftsmanship, Sustainability, Social impact and Community. Through these key pillars, we strive to create meaningful and lasting change ‘Restoring Dignity, Producing Quality’, for Product, People and Planet.

01

Craftmanship

Craftsmen and women are essential for taking the environmental impact of mass production  in furniture and furnishings levels down. Changing mindsets by being more available for householders to access. Changing behaviours and choosing to Recycle furniture and furnishings it is necessary to fill the skills gap.

02

Sustainable Practices

HJEM sustainability policy runs through our core practices, is integral to everything we do. We are dedicated to changing mind sets and instilling sustainable practices within communities, ensuring that our initiatives have a positive impact on the environment and future generations.

03

Social Impact

HJEM’s social impact policy and practice has developed out of recognising the lack of employability skills in the North East. The unemployment rate is 5.5% compared with the national average of 4.4% . HJEM workshops impact positive social change, incorporating into our workshops the welfare of the individual to get them work ready.

04

Community Engagement

HJEM is peripatetic in its approach to community with the Small House Project, this enables us to reach many local community groups and individuals, taking away the fear factor in collaborating with others and building on the sense of belonging in their local community for those furthest from the labour market and suffering with difficulties in engagement.
